This will be my third year teaching fifth grade. Each year I have read Harry Potter and the Sororcers Stone by J. K. Rowling. I didn't get any parents complaining the first year. Last year we actually read it together in| reading class. I only had two parents complain about it. I explained to them that I wouldn't teach witch craft or ever dream of it, but I will teach about friendship, loyalty, problem solving, and having a heart. Which all four books do teach very well and gets students interested in reading. I just let the two students whose parents decided they still didn't want them reading it read out | | of our anthology series together. They still heard the story because I refused to send them to another class. I will again read this book to my new class starting the first day of school. I have typed up a letter asking if any of my parents don't want them to hear it. I figured it is a great book to start with and the movie comes out Nov. 11th this year. What an awesome opportunity for a lesson. I am a big fan of these books and I love how the characters bond together to solve problems and work out their own problems with each other. I will also read The Phantom Tollbooth to my class this year as well. It shows them how we do need numbers and words together in the world. I then will show the movie and have them compare and contrast each one.
