I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but maybe you can adapt it. At the end of the year, we have a 5th grade promotion. We have the color guard, which is 4 5th grade students who stand up and give mini speeches about the significance of the flag. And what it means to them. These 4 students then honor 4 teacher chosen 4th graders by passing along the flag to students who posess the same characteristics that were discussed in their speeches. Hope it helps.
