    shared reading

Hi AngelStar... yes, I consider shared reading to be where everyone can see and read the same text, enlarged or with multiple copies. I consider interactive read aloud to be where the kids do not have to be able to read the text, only to practice their thinking strategies. I think TC says that shared read is word level strategy practice and interactive read is comprehension.

Right now, I am doing everything daily. BUT that's because at the beginning of the year, while the kids are building their independent reading stamina, I use more of my reader's workshop block for shared read. I basically have about 50 minutes for workshop. Right now, my breakdown is:

    15 minutes: Shared Read
    10 minutes: Reading meeting
20 minutes: Independent read (I've been bad about partner reading- my kids are using each other as partners throughout, but not having a special, cut out time)
    5 minutes: share

Then I have another hour block that break into 45 minutes of writers workshop and 15 minutes (usually goes over) interactive read aloud.

Here's the thing: I know my kids can read longer than 20 minutes (some days our shared read is shorter and they do read longer than that.) But my kids really need that shared reading everyday and because so many of them need it, it's worth it to me to cut a little independent reading to see that they get it.

Probably starting in Dec. (after our Accuracy unit is over), shared read will mostly disappear or fade to about 2 times a week. Then I will meet those needs in small group.

But I don't always do this the same way-- it's just this class.
