In the past I have introduced -ing by reading 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. We read, then re-read, identifying the -ing words. We made a list, identifed the root word etc. Then I have the kids make up their own stories about monkeys, but they have to change the jumping to another -ing word. They have produced stories like 5 Little Monkeys swinging/hugging/diving, even burping on the Bed! They then illustrate their stories. They can always identify -ing in reading after that and use it when they write:)
