A math idea...
I do something similar to Tonya's suggestion. I give each student an index card sized piece of white paper. I have them write their name in the top left corner and draw a picture of something they did
over the summer. Then they get to share, this gets them talking. After they share I tape their card to the blackboard. We them make graphs using the cards. I usually start with a topic like indoor or outdoor activities and have a few children come create the graph. Then I ask them for categories. The final step is creating a birthday chart. Before the lesson I have drawn a chart on
butcher paper with the months of the year down the left side. I ask all students with birthdays in January to stand. We write the date on their card and then put them in order left to right next to January. This is a fun way to see if they remember number order. We proceed through all the months. I then ask questions about the graph. Which month has the most birthdays etc. Not only a good teaching tool, but I have my birthday chart that stays up all year. Best of all my kids made it
