I use one for conferences! I preface it by explaining to the parents that is more for me since I could talk about their child all day! I also tell them that it's in no way meant to be rude or to cut anyone off: if more time is needed, we can certainly schedule another conference. I actually set it for about 2 minutes before I want to end as sort of a warning to wrap up so it doesn't seem so abrupt. I've been using a timer for a few years now and I haven't had anyone complain (to me anyway!) that I know of, but I have had comments of appreciation. I think everyone appreciates their time being respected. Many parents have to take a specific time away from work. If the conference before them is late, it can really be an issue for someone that needs to return to work. Many times the conference will end even before the timer does!
