My school does this the day before the new year begins. There is an hour set aside where parents and kids can come visit their teacher and room and see who else is in their class. It is very helpful and eliminates the first morning meeting of parents and dealing with their questions and lets you focus on the kids on the first day (who are tearless b/c they get to see everything the day before while it is still ok to be holding mommy's hand). Works great!
