using file folder games
By Julianne

Clip to ScrapBook
There are several ways you could use file folder games for center activity. Most of these games can be played individually or with a partner. Since you need to introduce a skill before the students play the game, these
games should be used as review. Having students work with partners on the games allows you to assign a competent student to a struggling student.

You can have two or three copies of a single game at a center and everyone plays the same game with a partner. You'd have to make multiple copies of your games, but you don't have to pretty them up if that's too much work. Also, since you

have older students, you can have students color and cut out the next week's game as a center activity.

Another way to use these is to have two or three different games out at your center. Students rotate through the games, playing either alone or with a partner. I like this way better for a number of reasons. First, I can assign a student a particular game because he needs work on a particular skill. Second, I don't have to make multiple copies of a game. Third, the center group has more to keep them occupied. It takes longer for them to finish their rotation. You'll go through more games this way, but you can have students repeat a game after a few weeks and it will seem fresh to them.

Other ways of using the games - have a practice sheet at the center. One pair plays the game while the other pair does the sheet. Then they switch. Or have the group play the game together. Most of these games can be adapted to four or five players. They just don't take as long to play that way, so be prepared with something else for this group to do if you go this way.
