Leveling books
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Helen,
When you read through the magnitude of what is considered when leveling books the way that Fountas and Pinnell suggest, there is no way to correlate to a syllable count (Fry's, etc). One of our Reading Recovery
teachers did an extensive study of books listed in Accelerated Reader (syllables) to those as leveled by F & P. The grade range discrepancy in some cases was as much as 4 GLs above or below...Teachers who thought their children were reading grade level material then struggling to retell the stories, were misled. If there is someone you can ask for help in leveling (as reading recovery
teachers, many of us have done this), I'd ask for support. If you want specifics on how books are leveled, see the Guided Reading book or email and I can give you some guidelines we used...Good luck. It's great to see you're taking this on, your children will really benefit!!! ;-D
