Respect! Always respect the kids, even while helping them know proper ways to behave in "mainstream" society. The others were correct--this is what they hear all the time.

How to be respectful while having discipline? Never have a "power struggle" in front of the class, never raise your voice, use humor, use eye contact with a lot of smiles, show warmth and caring in your voice, body language, and BE YOURSELF. Let your enthusiasm for life, teaching, education and young people come through!

I honestly believe kids will do so much for a teacher who cares.... they will forgive a lot of "false starts" if they know you on on their side!
