I use poetry for rereading By 1956BD
|
| My favorite source is a series of books written by Mary Ann Hoberman. They are all titled You Read To Me, I'll Read to You and then they have different subtitles. The poems are written for two voices and are color coded for the readers with adorable illustrations. There is the original book, fairy tales, rewritten nursery rhymes and scary tales. I pair my students, so one reader is a little better than the other and I give the better reader the first part. The slower reader will naturally try to match the faster reader's pace. I have them practice their poem every day for a week. (about 15 minutes) Then after the practice on Friday they present their poem to the class. I encourage them to be dramatic by adding simple costumes, props and motions. I walk around and listen during the week trying to help each group do a good job. They really enjoy this activity.
I also like a series of books by Jack Prelutsky. They all have poems about holidays. They are titled It's Halloween, It's Christmas and It's Valentines. I use them in the same way as explained above, but students usually alternate stanzas.
Take a look at these books and see if you think they would work for your class and students.
