1st day schedule By Kristy

I have the children work on the types of things outlined in the Open House "Me Poster" types of things as soon as they come in. It gets them busy and gives me time to deal with attendance and other clerical duties. I | have a great game that we play later in the day that teaches the importance of cooperation, patience, sharing, etc. I put the children into groups of 5. (I borrow a kid or 2 from another room if it doesn't work out evenly!) There are 5 squares of card stock, each cut into 3 pieces. Each square is cut up differently. Each child gets an envelope with 3 pieces in it. They do not make a | | square. (the 5 children have the 15 pieces necessary to make the 5 squares, but no one has the right ones) There are two rules to the game, no talking and no taking. Each child can give another child in their group a piece, that child MUST give them one of their pieces. They can't talk! They keep trading until each child has made a square. Remember - no talking & no taking. The kids will realize what piece they need to complete their square, but can't take it or ask for it. It is a great way to get a dialogue going about what behaviors helped with the group and what frustration felt like. It tells you alot about who the leaders and problem solvers are too. If you are interested, I could attempt to e-Mail you the shapes the squares are cut into, Although I don't think it really matters.
