Morning activities
By Debbie

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi Jennifer,
I think there have been several posts about this in various spots on proteacher...but here goes... having the kids come in, check in (homework, lunch count, notes home, etc.), then read, write, add to their
topic list, research are all possibilities.
Another possibility is doing a short 'Kids Time' (15-20 minutes) where they have the option to work with anything in the room-strategy or word games (chess, checkers, mancala, cranium, wordo, etc.), art (create a masterpiece) or music (play the keyboard), work on their current project (could be something they're researching and would like
to work on a poster, puppet show/reader's theater, whatever. Even just talking quietly with a friend. When announcements come on, the room must get quiet so they're heard; then clean up is accomplished quickly upon a transition song/signal or the time is shortened the next day (so there is an accountability for getting things done in a timely manner to start morning meeting). Hope this helps. Some teachers start with a Morning Message (could be incorporated with a DOL) but I enjoy the informal interaction with the kids during Kids Time, getting to hear about their sports activities, family stuff, etc. Sets a warm tone for the day, because everyone's had a chance to get 'connected' and ready for learning... Best of luck... ;-D
