If you get the book, Guided Reading by Fountas and Pinnell, there is a long section on there on Running Records, how to take them, score them, analyze them, and group for instruction (as well as lots on instruction in Reading). For the actual texts to use, I'd get the Developmental Reading Assessment by Joetta Beaver or possibly the one that was developed by Diane DeFord... Of course, if you're a Kinder or First grade teacher, I'd suggest getting the Observation Survey by Marie Clay. There are 6 subtests, appropriate for those GLs that would give you a comprehensive picture of the child as a reader and writer to begin instruction.
