STAR Test
By SM

Clip to ScrapBook
Our school uses the STAR Test to determine a child's reading level. We use that when determining a child's AR goal.
1. Find out each child's reading level.
2. Each child gets an index card they bring as a library
pass that has his/her name on it, and also what level of books the child may check out.
3. When the child returns to class, I look at the book to make sure it is on their level, not too long for that particular student, ect...
4. Goals are set for reading level (usually alittle bit higher than what they are currently at; something to reach for), points (look at the child's reading
level: will they be reading 0.5 books or thick chapter books that will take more time to read...), and also %average correct. You can get all this information from a diagnostic report from the AR amanagement file. At our school %average correct must be at or above an 85%. Last year I had a range of student levels from a 2.1 to a 6.8 (I teach 4th grade) Each child is different and will exceel at different rates.
