Hi. There is a book called "Baseball in April" by Gary Soto that has some stories that would work at the 4th grade level. But honestly, I have had difficulties finding short stories too. My other suggestion would be to take individual chapters from chapter books (some can stand alone) or to look for picture books with richer vocabulary (I know they're out there because I ran into many that were too advanced for the first graders I worked with last year).
