My students wrote on their journals daily. I taught them to put the date & their name at the top of each page. We started with simple sentences/pictures of whatever they wanted. Near the end of the year I was giving them prompts & they were writing paragraph style entries (at least tried to). They liked journals because it was open-ended and they could do anything they wanted in them...make lists, charts, diagrams, etc.
