5th grade
By Jessica

Clip to ScrapBook
Hello! Last year was my first year as a teacher, also in the 5th grade.
Even though I don't have 25 years of experience, I'll share my advice with you.
I was very prepared and ready for the students. At this age you
may want to assign seats--this will show them immediately that you are in charge and in control.
The 1st day was entirely spent on RULES and procedures as well as handing out books and papers to go home. I had several "fun sheets" for time killers. EXAMPLE: a word search w/students names, back to school puzzles, mazes and a scavenger hunt for our assignment books(school rules).
The
whole first week we did "get to know you" activities and DRILLED the rules.
I tried to do fun things and not even get into the book the first week. Don't forget that the 1st week sets the tone for the whole year. I heard that saying sooooo many times, but it is soo very true!
Hope some of that info help.
