    guided reading

My small group time is actually 20 minutes and I always feel crunched for time, but like the PP said, I take more than a day with the same book most of the time. Usually on the first day I intro the book and we take a pic walk and discuss some predictions, etc. I also intro my teaching point....a word family, a few sight words, bold print, punctuation, vocabulary, etc..and we find it in the book and do some activities with it. That is usually all we have time for the first day...unless it is an upper group and we can move quick. The second day is a very quick review and then we spend the time reading and dicussing. The third day we reread, discuss lots, and usually do some type of written response or activity.

It took me a while to find a routine (for lack of a better word) that I liked and felt was a worthwhile use of time. ONe thing that really, really helped me was Jessica Meachem's guided reading plans. If you go to her site and look under guided reading she has TONS of plans already written. I didn't have most of those books, but the format helped guide my planning and thinking about how to run my reading group. Maybe you will also find it helpful.

    Good luck!
    :)
