I Agree with You

I have three teenage daughters and have subbed for three years. I am currently in the credential program. I most definitely agree that if students are told that they are BAD, they will live "up" to your expectations. The
same goes for parents. When going into some very difficult classes, I have had to put my foot down more than once. I always tell the students that they are SMART and GOOD and know the difference between good and bad behavior, so shape up. I tell them that we all make mistakes and that is ok, but that their behavior is NOT ACCEPTABLE. I separate the person from the behavior because
as you said, if a person i.e. teacher or parent says that I am worthless, then it gives me a license and an excuse to misbehave. I try to build up their self-esteem.
