Snacks By Joy

I must say that I totally agree with Cathy-Dee. Each day my third graders are responsible for bringing in their own snacks. The first day of school is the only day that I provide a snack for my class. After the first day,| I encourage the children to bring in something nutritious, but it seldom happens.During the first week of school we brainstorm a list of good snacks that is sent home as a guideline. Unfortunately the fruits and veggies, etc. are too costly for my students' families. Now, I will pretty much allow most snacks with the exception of cookies and candies. I know that most children have difficulty | | remembering their own personal snack. I would be concerned that if a child could not be reponsible for him/herself, how could he/she be responsible for the snack for the entire class. What would happen if a child forgot? Would the entire class go without a snack that day?The only time that I request whole class treats is at my open house where I have party folders(Halloween/Christmas & Valentine's Day/Spring) set up where parents are asked to sign up for a specific party treat. A week before the party, I copy the list and send the highlighted item home as a reminder. Most parents do a great job returning the requested items, but some do forget. I hope that you are able to come up with a plan for snacks that will work for you! You may have to try a trial and error period to see if the plan will work. Good Luck!
