Line-up
By Helen

Clip to ScrapBook
Here again you can be creative and practice skills also. I sometimes let my students stand at their desks and then line up tallest to shortest, or by birthdays (months), alphabetical order (early in the year by first letter,
later by first two letters etc.),by what color you are wearing (I call out), quietest table, table that is ready first, cleanest table. We line up for lunch by what they ordered. I have even had my first graders line up in "reverse alphabetical order by last names"..keeps the same one from leading the line everytime you do alphabetical order. can also line up boy and girls and have
each smaller group get into a certain order..I do this when we are going to the restrooms.
On the playground ,to go in after free play, I simply tell them to watch for me, I raise my hand high and walk to a line up area, usually one or two see me and start running, the rest join in. If all don't see them, they usually call to each other as they come.
After you line up you can have them number off using positional or ordinal numbers. We sometimes count off by 2's ,5's. or 10's. You could even have them count down if they were ready for that 21,20,19 etc
You are only limited by your imagination and your childrens' ages and abilities.
