Gerbils

You've gotten lots of great advice. I too got a pair of gerbils my first year teaching fifth grade and was also assured that both were females. I discovered the error when a group of boys were gathered around the cage giggling and laughing in a secretive way. It wasn't long after we had pups.
The only thing I would add to what has been said is not to underestimate the chewing factor. I had mine in a plastic habittrail type thing and they chewed right through the plastic and escaped all the time.
Good luck. They are fun and cute.
PS I never had a biting problem and mine were handled by the kids quite a bit.
