Hamster fun
By Jane D

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm sure you will enjoy having a hamster in your classroom, but they are escape artists. The main way ours escaped from the plastic cage with tubes was at the spot where the water bottle hung down through a hole. We had
to keep something heavy on top of the bottle. When we had the type of cage with wire sides(like a birdcage) the hamster could slide the wire door up and escape, so we had to keep it wired shut. Then we tried the aquarium. She climbed on top of her house and pushed the wire top off, swung on it and climbed out! We started keeping a heavy book on the top. The best way we found to catch her
was to build a ramp she could climb up and then she had to jump down into something she couldn't climb back out of. To get attract her to the ramp, we would scrape a carrot and rub the wet carrot up the ramp. She followed the scent into the "trap", which was of course the bucket or whatever we wanted her to jump into. This successfully caught her many times. Good luck, and enjoy!
