Clip to ScrapBook
Your question reminded me of something I did once to expand use of vocabulary and recognize the effort...different than a reward. I made a chart with a grid and called it "Buzzwords" decorated with bees. Each time we introduced
a new word I would put it on the chart. Anytime after that if the kids found the word anywhere in their reading they would show me and get to put a sticker next to the word on the chart. It kept the words fresh in their minds and gave them an incentive to read carefully with a focus whatever they happened to be reading. I started with a fairly common word to get the ball rolling.
Some kids became quite good word detectives. You will need to establish a procedure as to how and when you want to be interrupted with their discoveries...sometimes they get carried away with excitement when they find a word. I think I'll do it again this year since you reminded me...Thanks!!
