I loop with my 4th graders up to 5th grade, and at the beginning of 4th grade I like to read a special chapter book the first week. It's called Marvin Redpost: Why Pick On Me? by Louis Sachar. The reading level is about 3rd grade, but the theme -- bullying and teasing -- is relevant to all. I am considering reading it again at the beginning of 5th grade -- if my students want to hear it again. It's short enough to read in 3 or 4 days depending on how much read-aloud time you have. It is really a funny book that kids love. The message is not "preachy" and kids "get it."
