Our school district uses specific assessments, so you may inquire about what your district has available. Also, during the first week I always do teambuilding and self-esteem building activities. I always have the kids draw| a self-portrait on 9 x 12 construction paper to put up for display when we talk about how uniquely special we all are. I give them just a brief set of directions and ask them to make it look like they look today. about art, self-concept, etc. Most kids seem to enjoy this activity if it is presented positively. We do a second one at the end of the year to compare growth overall.
