Mothers who work as teachers By Brenda

I began taching 15 years ago. My daugher was 3 and my son was 18 months. They are now very well adjusted teens. While I can't speak for them I hope they feel that I do have them as my number one priority. To address your| dilemma: It will not feel good on that first day of school . I was fortunate because when my daugher entered kindergarten I sent her to another school and the starting day was one week before my own class started. This was not always the case as they grew up. If I could not be there on the first day my husband was there. I took sick days here and there to volunteer on occasion for | | their classroom but found many teachers not always willing to have a "teacher mom" come in to volunteer. There were always things that teachers requested that I could do outside the classroom. I get the feeling from your post that you may not be ready to work full time. Teaching takes up a lot of time outside the classroom . I found myself constantly worried about whether my own kids had enough of my attention. This is a problem that all "outside the home working moms" have. We will always have that worry. Looking back I can say that by involving my kids and my husband with the many fun parts of teaching, we have all enjoyed the "ride." My son would like to be a kindergarten teacher and my daughter wants to be a pediatrician They have seen me enthusiastically get off to work each morning and go to a very fun and rewarding job. I don't think it is a matter of "my child first and my job second" as much as it is a matter of can I afford to stay home until such time that my family is ready for me to work outside the home? If you have to work (and think long and hard about that one) than you have no choice but to go to work. Find ways to involve the family in what is a very rewarding career and always put your family first. It is possible for teachers to do that. I hope this "little speech" will help you in some way.
