grades
By MA

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach second grade also and have for a long time. My kids come a first grade that doesn't give any grades other than S U. It's really hard for the parents to understand why their child is not getting A's when they got all
S's in 1st grade! So I always have explaining to do at the first conference.

Anyway, here's what I do: Each subject gets 2 pages in my grade book. Then I usually keep track of the # missed for each child. Total points goes at the bottom of each column for each item you're taking a grade for. I do not take a grade for everything. Tests, I do and other ws/papers/assignments that are important

or would give me a picture of how they're mastering a skill. I use percentages for tests and put the percentage on the test itself, but I don't put letter grades. Parents get too hung up on letter grades. If they see all A's and B's on papers they assume their child is going to get an A on the report card and that's not always true. I take a grade on weekly spelling tests. We give grades every 9 weeks, so 4x a year, plus we do midterm progress reports, but I do not use letter grades on those, just an S, NI so parents can see where their child may need improvement. I hope this wasn't too confusing and I hope I helped you! Good luck! Email me if you need more info!!
