Next, I brought in shoes....running shoes, heels (they love that) , soccer shoes, my husbands shoes, etc, and use those to talk about purpose and good fit. I even trade shoes with one of the students and we talk about how I really like the shoe but it just doesn't fit! Some people use tee shirts for this. Finally, we relate it to books. I brought in a stack of books from my reading at home to demonstrate the different purposes for reading, and an accounting book that my husband used in college. I read from that to show that, even though I can read the words, I have no comprehension..even if I back up and reread! I even threw in there the riding your bike uphill all the time or coasting all the time...sometimes that is fine, but it is too difficult or too easy for all the time. You won't become a stronger bike rider if you coast all the time, but it is fun sometimes and it's good to ride uphill some because it helps you get stronger, but all the time and you get too tired. This took 2 days to get through, and we (my assistant and I) are talking about it individually as each child shops or goes to the library.
