5th sample daily schedule
By Alyssa

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach a combined 4th - 5th - 6th classroom -- lots of individual and small group lessons and students work at their own pace.

8:10 Bell Work

8:20 students go to specials (art, music, computer, PE); my plan time

9:10
students return from specials; start worktime

9:10 - 11:15 Worktime: students do individually paced work. They are required to do bell work (language, usually), daily math 1/2 page sheet, 1 math work, 1 language work, 1 social studies or science work, and 1 choice work (which can be more of any of the above). I give lessons to individuals and small groups, help students, etc. This schedule

lets students choose (to some degree) how much time they need to spend on a given subject; it is very successful if you have mainstreamed and gifted students in the same class, as I do.

11:15 - 11:30 Clean up and PAT time: When enough students finish cleaning up, we start a whole-group game, which is usually related to our curriculum (US geography Jeopardy, for example). They love it and clean up *fast*!

11:30 - 12:00 Group time: We discuss and have a short quiz on the homework, handle any class issues, and perhaps have a short Character Counts minilesson. I then read aloud (15 minutes or more) from a literature book.

12:00 - 12:05 Get ready for and go down to lunch and recess

12:40 - 1:35 Writers' Workshop: I often start this with a minilesson; kids write for at least 30 minutes.

1:35-1:55 Silent reading: I meet with small groups (1 group a day) for literature circles

1:55 - 2:00 Transition

2:00 - 2:40 Flexible period: This is where I teach science, social studies and other whole-group lessons. What we do varies widely with the subject.

2:40 - 2:53 Clean up, prepare for dismissal and leave

I hope this helps!
