homework dilema
By Patti

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 1st grade and we do require a minimal amount of homelearning from the students. They must write the spelling words one time a week and each night there is reading homework. The reading is only 1 to 3 pages depending
on the student's level of reading. I give stickers for completed homework. The students do not like missing these. I have had parents tell me that their child "bugged" them until the homework was done because they wanted the sticker. A completed page of stickers gets the child a trip to the treasure box. I also keep track of "no homeworks". Each student begins the quarter with a 100
as a homework grade. Each "no homework" brings that grade down, not to mention that it will affect the reading grade due to lack of practice. I "sit" children down for recess only if their behavior warrants it or seatwork hasn't been done by afternoon recess. I feel that if these 2 things aren't accomplished by afternoon, the child has already had recess in the classroom. HOpe this helps a little.
