china activities
By Kara

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach in Virginia where our Standards of Learning mandated by our state requires second gradeers to learn about ancient China. After studying China for a little over a week, we did a week of activities.

Crickets are
a sign of good luck and many people have them as pets in China. Make one using a wooden clothes pin, the kind with the metal spring in the middle. Color the entire clothes pin green with a magic marker. Put eyes on it with a black marker. Cut wings out of green construction paper and glue on back/top of cricket. Crickets are usually kept in boxes, so have some paper boxes ready to put
them in. Also since it is pre-school you are doing this with cut out the wings ahead of time.

Making masks is another fun thing to do. I have patterns for a panda and a dragon. I put tissue paper streamers on the dragon mask like it would be for the Chinese New Year.

I also made laterns using 4 small paper plates. They draw on the side you would eat on, then they are stapled together. Punch a hole in the top and bottom of each plate. Tie red yarn from each hole, then gather the top pieces of yarn together and tie together. Do the same for the bottom yarn pieces.

I have some other idea books, but all my things are in storage until I go to my new school. I won't be able to get to them until late August, but let me know if it would help.
