I do something similar: I have a posterboard with a library pocket card on it for each child. At our school, the only report we have to turn in is the number buying snack. So I have one color of cut-out apples for "buying snack" and another color for "brought snack". The kids know that as soon as they come in in the morning they must check in by placing the appropriate apple in their name. Then I can really tell at a glance who is not there and we can remember who ordered a snack.
