homework and responsibility
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I do assign some homework but not much (but then again I teach grade 1 so they shouldn't have as much homework). I have always felt that homework is the responsibility of the student and the parents. I even have my parents
responsible for marking or checking the homework. To me homework is a chance to practice the skills and learning we do at school, it is not "new" things. For many children the extra practice helps them with their class work and also with their confidence level. It also allows parents to see what their children are doing.

I think sometimes we have taken on too much responsibility

and homework is exactly that work to be done at home (not at school). If parents are concerned and want homework, a homework book or log for them to sign is fine as well to ensure that the student knows they can't simply lose their homework when they don't feel like doing it. And parents should be made well aware of the homework policy, when homework will be sent home and when it is expected back.

So... I don't keep students in for not having homework done, BUT I have no problem keeping students inside to finish work that they had plenty of time to finish during class. I watch to make sure it's not the same kids day in and day out in case there is more to the situation than them just not finishing their work.
