recess

I teach third grade. I don't believe in homework as a mom or a teacher, but it is required at my school. I assign the minimum amount, but even that often doesn't done. We don't have any detention we can give. There is nothing we can do besides keep the kids out at recess. I make these kids walk at recess to release energy. I have tried giving a grade for missing homework also, but that is too abstract for a third grader to feel like in 9 weeks this homework will matter. I don't feel there is a good way to solve this. I really feel like we are always complaining that our kids are growing up too fast, but we aren't giving them any time to be kids.
