I don't know what grade you teach, but we did a group activity once (it could be done in any grade) where the kids were put in groups of 5 and given a part of the solar system to create. They used a variety of materials. One group even covered a card board box with aluminum foil to make a space ship. The other groups made certain planets and when we put it all together it was really elaborate and everybody came by to see it. If you have a lot of space you could cover the walls with black paper (if available) and have the students make each part of the display. They could also do reports on the part the create and present it to the class. I hope this helps!
