Make Up Work
By Amy Lee

Clip to ScrapBook
Anne,

I agree with the other two responses. I especially like the idea about having the students write a statement why the homework/make up work is incomplete. I would check with your principal to see if the school has
a make up work policy. My school has a make up work policy depending on how many days the student missed for being sick, death in the family, etc. If the days missed were due to a vacation without prior written notice to the teachers and administrator then all make up work becomes zeroes.

I am a special education teacher working with grades 6-8 and I have my own work completed policy

for late work. For sixth grade they have a week to turn in any missed work but 2 points are deducted per day late. For seventh grade they have 5 days turn in late work but 3 points are deducted per day late. For eighth grade they have 3 days to turn in late work but 4 points are deducted per day late. Both students and their parents are given written notice of the policy. My school provides homework planners to students free of charge and all students must write down the assignment and the teachers and parents must initial. Each teacher has a homework poster similar to the page from the students' agenda book. I leave the previous day's assignments up for the students to write in the work missed while they were absent. Also each teacher has a homework planner just like the students. I write the assignments in it each day. This helps me as well to know when I assigned the work and is it too late for a student to complete. If a student missed more than one day then he or she refers to the agenda book.

Each of my students has a portifolio folder with pockets. If we are doing a worksheet, then instead of handing out the sheet I placed it in a folder. Also the folder is used for assignments I want to keep in the classroom and the homework to be completed that night. A student helper hands out the folders and they are kept in a central location. Students know from the beginning of school if they are absented then the missed worksheets are in their folder and textbook work is located on the homework board or my planner on the chalk tray. Also I place a photocopy of any notes taken in the folder. The folder system has worked great for me to communicate with students. I even place stickers on the front of it and place treats in pockets for good behavior. I am surprise how many students come to class and the first thing they do is get their folder to see what we are doing and of course to see if their is a treat in their folder. I also place warm up activities for students to complete while attendance is being taken, work with students who may had difficulty with the homework, and I check to see who completed their homework. Enrichment activities are in the folder for students who finish their work early and it becomes extra credit or participation points. It is not busy work but activities which correlate with previous skills learned.
