chapter books for 5th grade
By Cheryl

Clip to ScrapBook
You can use a lot of good non-fiction for both social studies and science. For Social Studies the Dear America and My Name is America series are good books for history. I used a survival theme - my read-aloud was "Hatchet"
and literature group choices were "Island of the Blue Dolphins", "My Side of the Mountain", and "The Cay". During a unit on "Catastrophes" we read "Volcano Disaster" by Peg Kehret as a read aloud, used our anthology for reading and Patricia Lauber's book, "The Eruption and Healing of Mount St. Helens" in science. "Volcano Disaster" is also about Mount St. Helens, so it tied in really
well. We tied this into a Science unit on the rock cycle, as well as catastrophes. If you have access to the books,"Strategies That Work", and "Non-Fiction Matters", by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudis, they give a lot of really good ideas as well as book lists. Hope this helps.
