You need to make connections for them--real life connections that they can understand. Hands on learning, thematic base, authentic, inclusive and interactive learning. Bring in outstanding people from their community. | If you can help them connect with the positive influences in the community that helps. I am familiar with your area and know that there are challenges but there are also people in that community that want to help. Do you live in the community? If not you will need to reach out to those that do. Also Cal State L.A. or Northridge has an accelerated school satellite that works in the area | | of powerful learning and could steer you into some materials and research that will help. Keep portofolios of student work showing growth in the standards. The Sat9 will still want the kids to read and understand about the Norwegian thistle (a real stretch for our kids) but you will have proof that they are learning and are within the standards. Hopefully you are not the only one at your school that wants to see change and break the cycle, look around you for a team approach. It is a challenge working with children of poverty, but you will make a difference for them. If you need any assistance contact me I can send some information your way and ideas your way to meet specific problems you may have.
