Planning Reading Instructional Time
By Harris

Clip to ScrapBook
Welcome to teaching! Your enthusiasm and excitement is showing through your words!

It's great that you are thinking about all the details that go into making your instruction effective. Don't forget that you'll need to
demonstrate/model each of the daily, weekly, and monthly activites for the students. Without some clear expectations and guidance, they will probably not produce the quality work that you want.

You mentioned that your class will be high second graders and low third graders. You may find that although their "on paper" reading levels are similar, their actual reading skills may be different.

The low third graders may need more teacher support than the high second graders. Forming flexible, small groups for instruction within the reading period can help you to provide specific skill instruction to the students who need it.

Your best source of advice will probably be the present second and third grade teachers at your school. Get to know them well. I'm sure they'll appreciate your enthusiasm and support you in any way they can.

Have a wonderful year!
