Did a unit last year
By Katherine

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi there,
I did a unit on the upcoming winter olympics with a fifth grade ESL class. I used lots of handouts from the official SLC2002 website www.slc2002.org

We studied symbolism using the mascots (what qualities
they symbolized and where they came from) and the olympic flag as well. Then they created their own olympic symbol and described what it stood for. I also did a little geography with them (search Utah maps to find a worksheet with state and questions. Can't remember where I found it ) You could also follow the torch relay on a map.
There are pins and pencils available on the website
too, though when I ordered some the order never went through. I'm going to try to get some this summer--going there on vacation in 2 days!

They loved coloring the mascots and other sheets I printed out (the flag, winter sports, etc.) In fact, they made a booklet with all the sheets and had to have it in the correct order and everything neatly colored.

Good luck sorting all this out! Have fun with the olympics. . . the options are almost endless! Making medals, having your own version of the olympics, watching some of the action on TV, etc.
