    Modeling
    By flighty

When introducing a new small group/intervention activity,I usually will try have paras watch me do part of a lesson first and model what should be done. Then they can call over the group/child assigned to them.Or, I start by doing an activity whole group 1st while the para is there, then she does it the same way and I differentiate as needed for struggling students. When we are doing Literacy centers I usually take the lower students in my groups and assign the para the higher level students for reinforcement.

We do things like sound boxes, sound and letter sorts and matches, rhyme activities, clap the syllables...in the beginning of the year. I have pre-made word lists and picture sets for the para to refer to. Later in the year, students can do word work with letter tiles, even guided reading. I have 1 general guided reading lesson plan laminated. Most paras are really good with this, some aren't and need to stick to basic drill activities.

Finally, I have a list of activities that can be done anytime with any student whenever a child has a few minutes or is struggling during group-flash cards and such...

We do RTI and some students get 30, some get 90 additional min. We rarely get that time in in 1 whole block, but here and there throughout the day.
