too old?
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I have taught fifth and sixth graders. This past year I taught fifth. No, they're not too old to perform classroom jobs. We just don't use the cutesy charts on the walls as the first grade teacher might. I have seen intermediate teachers use something like a pair of overalls on the wall (yes, real ones)--the kind with lots of pockets. In these pockets they put the jobs and kids' names on them.

I, personally, don't use a wall chart of any kind. I just use a checklist in my notebook. I give rotating jobs like: safety patrol in the hallway, morning news program, chalkboard, floor inspector, lunchroom table washer, bathroom monitor--to name a few. My kids liked to do the jobs. It's also a responsible and neat habit to develop.
