AR Requirements By Karen

On our report cards, we have a subheading under reading for "independent reading". This is where we indicate progress in AR. Each student has an individual goal set by our reading coordinator and each quarter our expectations| are different. 1st Quarter, a student receives an "E" for reaching their point goal or any certification Independent or above. All children are expected to reach "Independent Reader" by the end of second quarter. An "S" can be achieved by maintaining 80% average correct or above. An "N" is earned by having 79% or less or low points. 2nd quarter, we give "E's" to those students | | who earn Super Reader or above or who meet their point goals. An "S" is earned by those achieving Indepentent Reader and 80% average percent correct. An"N" is earned by low points or low average percent correct. All students must be at least Super Readers by the end of the year. The school district would like to see them Advanced or higher. We also have an incentive chart and daily recognition for those students reading and testing. During AR Recognition Time, the kids love to have their names announced and getting applause from the rest of the class. This takes time, but I think it is worth it. Our principal also announces weekly additions to the Wall of Fame. We feel AR has been a great addition to our reading program.
