Homework policy By Eileen

I have to agree with many of the comments that have been stated about assigning homework and the purpose for it. I teach fourth grade and, along with my colleagues, we each assign the same amount of homework each night- usually 3 assignments and independent reading. I was beginning to get overwhelmed with checking and handing back homework. I was dreading it each day. Until......my friend told me about her system of checking homework. She calls it "Base Groups". Since the children are in cooperative tables, each table becomes a "Base Group". Each morning I call "Base Groups". At that time, one | | member of each team (The Base Group Leader for the Day) retrieves the Base Group Folder. In there, I have a checklist where the leader records that everyone has completed the assignments for each subject. They go over it as a group and answer each other's questions. Anything I need collected goes in the folder. I do sometimes collect math homework just to see the quality of the work being done, or other written work to actually grade. But, since most was already corrected, the work for me is far less. While they are going over it, I rotate around, answer any questions, and record on my clipboard who did not complete the assignments. I have been using this system for 2 years and it has worked like a charm.
