In addition to posting a daily quote, I tie my journal question to it. By doing this, it really focuses their attention to the meaning of the quote and its relation to their life. Since I also teach in NY where our state assessment frequently has the students explaining quotes, this activity allows them some familarity with the task, while letting them freely express their own ideas in words.
