Reading Skills in S.S.
By Lora

Clip to ScrapBook
I too, love to use the textbook as one of their reading books. Students get a lot of practice with narrative books, but not that much expository text when it comes to reading skills. This is what makes up state standardized
tests.

I also use "Think Sheets" and have them make predictions to a question that they have before reading the material. I only allow them to look at the title or skim headings to help them write a question. Then they read and write what the text actually says about their question.

It is set up like this:

Think Sheet

Question:

Prediction:

Text:

Simple,

but it helps them comprehend what they read much better. Sometimes I write the question if it is an objective of the lesson.

Can someone else give a specific example? I would love to try other things.
