balancing social studies instruction
By Natalie

Clip to ScrapBook
We basically have social studies put on the back burner, too. A pity, since you can do so much with it!

I take the time to incorporate it within everything else I teach. I make a point of pulling down the wall map in
math, reading, or science to talk about regions of the world and to find them. Science lends itself well to bringing in geography. When you talk about habitats, for example, you can use maps. You can also talk about history when you talk about habitats. I read historical fiction with my fourth graders to bring in history. I read aloud "Number the Stars" to my kids to understand World
War II.

There's no telling when these kids will be taught the traditional history and geography with so much emphasis on math and reading in schools today. We just have to sneak it into our day as we find the opportunity. Think carefully of any history or geography opportunities you can present in math, reading, writing, or science.
