cursive in k-5
By shelly 1/2

Clip to ScrapBook
I currently teach at an Abeka school. We teach printing in k-4 and cursive in k-5. It is surprising how well our kinders write in cursive. They also see printed letters constantly on charts, blend ladders, and alphabet cards,
not to mention their reading books. Everything we do is in cursive, but many of my students like printing too. My son is in second grade and has wonderful cursive handwriting, he can also print very well. My daughter is currently learning printing in K-4.

I do need to mention that my son's k-5 teacher is very structured and a 'prefectionist' who strived to teach her students to succeed.

Comparing her students handwriting to students who had a teacher not as structured in any area, you could see a difference.

One problem that I've seen is if the child is taken out of our school and placed in public school, they will not allow them to write in cursive. I don't know when they actually teach cursive, but some students I've had in second grade were upset in public school third grade because they had to print.
